Mayor DeBlasio wants to move the Garment Center in Manhattan to Sunset City in Brooklyn. The incredible microcosm of the New York City Garment District has catered to designers, the theater district and many more with its vast ecosystem of supporters: thread supplies, trimmings, linings, showrooms--it is all right there in a very accessible area. The few remaining factories face escalating rents as landlords are trying to force them out and more apartments, hotels and restaurants are filling their space. The GCSA Foundation did a survey of garment manufacturers and found that 88% would prefer to shut down rather than move. See results here: www.gcsafoundation.org/survey/.
